This list below is by no means comprehensive, but it should give you a good selection of online resources for activity shopping. If you need more, just type the activity you have in mind into Google, Yahoo or another search engine and see what pops up. Calendars - There are lots of possibilities here, but tourism sites are a pretty good place to begin. Try these: Pennsylvania (www.visitpa.com) statewide calendar, plus road trips and more. Adams County (www.gettysburg.travel) click on “Visitors” at the top of the page and explore. Includes good listing of restaurants. York County (www.yorkpa.org) similarly comprehensive, but you don’t have to click on “Visitors.” Slightly farther afield try (www.visithhc.com) for the Harrisburg-Hershey area, (www.padutchcountry.com) for Lancaster County, and (www.visitmaryland.org) (www.carrollcountytourism.org) or (www.fredericktourism.org) if you want to head “south of the border.” For Philadelphia or other destinations, check the state tourism sites or use a search engine to find that city/area’s own tourism site. Chamber of Commerce Websites also provide useful “destination” information. The local chamber sites are: Area media outlets also are good sources of information. The Hanover Evening Sun publishes a weekly entertainment section called “FlipSide,” which also is posted on its website (www.eveningsun.com). The Gettysburg Times has a weekly entertainment section as well, but you’ll need a paid subscription to its digital edition to view it online. York and Harrisburg papers also are available locally and have information on their websites, as do some area “lifestyle” magazines. Theatres - This area is blessed with a number of performance venues, where you can find music, plays, films and more. Here are some websites to explore: Eichelberger Performing Arts Center (www.theeich.org), Hanover Majestic Theater (www.gettysburgmajestic.com), Gettysburg (also has two small “movie theaters” showing independent and foreign films) Strand Capitol Performing Arts Center (www.strandcapitol.org), York Pullo Family Performing Arts Center (www.pullocenter.psu.edu), York Fulton “Opera House” Theatre (www.atthefulton.org), Lancaster American Music Theatre (www.americanmusictheatre.com), Lancaster Sight & Sound Theater (www.sight-sound.com), Lancaster (Christian/Bible-themed performances) Whitaker Center for Science and the Arts (www.whitakercenter.org), Harrisburg (also has an IMAX theater and exhibit areas) Hershey Theatre (www.hersheytheatre.com), Hershey H. Movies are available on more than 30 screens within about 10 miles of Cross Keys even more if you’re headed for York. The Hanover Movies 16 and Gettysburg Gateway 8 theaters are part of the R/C Theatres chain (www.rctheatres.com), and the Gettysburg Village Cinema is operated by Frank Theatres (www.franktheatres.com). The Diamond Cinemas in Hanover show second-run films on six screens at reduced prices. Gettysburg’s Majestic Theater is listed above as a performing arts facility but also shows movies on two screens. A commercial website, (www.fandango.com), carries listings for all theaters except the Majestic. The theater websites (except for the Majestic) can be a little difficult to navigate, but local movie listings can usually be found in the newspapers as well. Sports & Recreation For the participant, the area has numerous health clubs, including both a YWCA (www.ywcahanover.org) and a YMCA (www.hanoverymca.org) in Hanover, as well as a YWCA (www.ywcagettysburg.org) in Gettysburg. Some facilities are members of the Chambers of Commerce and may be found in their directories; nearly all are in the Yellow Pages. Golfers have a great selection of courses within 20 miles or so or campus. Here’s a list. Spectator sports include the York Revolution baseball team (www.yorkrevolution.com) and its “War of the Roses” rivals, the Lancaster Barnstormers (http://lancasterbarnstormers.com) and the Harrisburg Senators (www.senatorsbaseball.com). The Hershey Bears (http://www.hersheypa.com/events/hershey_bears) are nearby for the ice hockey fan. College sports provide football and basketball excitement. See the websites of Gettysburg College (www.gettysburg.edu), McDaniel College in Westminster (www.mcdaniel.edu), Mount St. Mary’s University in Emmitsburg, Md.
