2008 Race/Walk for the Ages set for May 3; butterflies join participants

As part of the Centennial celebration for Cross Keys Village – The Brethren Home Community, the 2008 Race/Walk for the Ages on Saturday, May 3, will have some exciting new features and should bring a large contingent of participants to campus.

Just for starters: there’s a spring “Roller Division,” and there are butterflies.

Activities will begin with the 5K race itself, though. Registration will start at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, and the race will get underway at 8:30. The walk will follow, along with a kids’ dash that will begin at 9:15.

After the races have finished, the Centennial Butterfly Release will take place near the pond in front of the Health Care Center. This extra attraction will feature the release of hundreds of Monarch butterflies. “Sponsorships” are available for the butterflies in this festive, visually stunning event.

Previously linked with a separate walk event in the fall, the Roller Division was held on its own last year and now will expand to a spring date as well.

The Roller Division will lead off all the activity on Friday, May 2, beginning at 1:00 p.m. This popular event gives volunteers the opportunity to “roll” residents in their wheelchairs around a brief course on campus, with entertainment to follow at the pond.

Several area corporations regularly send volunteers, and anyone interested should contact the Volunteer Services Office at 717-624-5227 for details.

Advance registration for the races may be done online – click here for the page with both the online registration link and a PDF form that can be printed out and mailed in or delivered. Registration is $15 in advance or $20 on the day of the event for the race, and $5 for the kids’ dash. There is no charge to participate in the walk. All runners receive a t-shirt and food after the events.

Those interested in learning more about this special day at Cross Keys may contact the Brethren Home Foundation Office at 717-624-5208 or v.berger@crosskeysvillage.org.
